Die Strände

Saint-Jean-de-Monts is bordered by 8 km of beautiful, long, safe, fine sandy beaches, with excellent water quality. Like the entire Vendée coastline, the resort benefits from a favourable climate. The Vendée's share of the sun compares favourably with France’s Mediterranean coast, earning it the soubriquet “Coast of Light”.
There is always something happening on the beach. Every season brings its own opportunities for getting the best out of it: bursting with life in summer, romantic sunset walks, breathing in the sea air or feeling the sea spray from a spring tide.

The beach is there for everyone. The slope is gentle and the waves are small. Safety is ensured by lifeguards (seasonal) and bathing flags.
The water quality is good. St Jean de Monts has a Blue Flag.
Tides wash the Atlantic coastline in a perpetual rhythm, ebbing and flowing twice a day. Spring tides bring good fishing when the tide is out.

The beach - a living environment

Saint-Jean-de-Monts is determined to preserve the natural features of its Atlantic coast by opting for a selective cleaning policy. Only rubbish left by people is removed. Anything left by the sea is not rubbish, but the natural deposit of a living ocean. It is a living environment, which encourages biodiversity. Its preservation forms part of a sustainable development policy. Seaweed and sea grass deposited by the waves form a natural habitat, protected at both national and European levels. It is left in place because it plays several essential roles. The natural constituent of marine deposits comprises the remains of marine growth and also of sea creatures washed up from the shallows, carried by the current and left on the beach when the tide ebbs. It traps the sand carried by the sea and breaks down, enriching the soil with organic matter and nitrates, which allow ecosystems above the high water mark to flourish.

Shellfish gathering

When the sea ebbs, it uncovers a wide strip of damp sand called the strand. Shellfish gatherers then dig in the sand, looking for shellfish.
N.B. Few people are aware of it but this type of fishing is subject to stringent regulations.
