The castle, a symbol of the history of the town and Brittany, is uniquely located in the city centre. It has been fully restored.
You can walk right round the walls for some unusual views of the castle and town, take a stroll in the courtyard or the gardens laid out in the old moat, or admire the floodlighting of the history building after dark. There is no charge for access to the walls, courtyard or gardens. The 15th-century ducal residence now houses the new Nantes History Museum and hosts temporary exhibitions. There is a restaurant in the Old Keep and a book and gift shop. Log onto the Dukes of Brittany’s castle website The Island of Nantes, once a shipyard, is Nantes’ largest urban project. In the west of the island, in the old boat sheds, a 12-metre tall elephant takes passengers on a trip round the island. Each time it goes on a tour, the elephant is a unique sight.
