Le Marais Poitevin (ou Venise Verte)

The “Marais poitevin” is France’s second largest area of wetlands after Camargue and the largest marsh in Western France. Pushed back by the alluvium from the rivers over many centuries, the ocean has left behind a vast stretch of marshland.

Channels have been dug and dykes erected by the local people. The water in the marshes is both fresh and salt, leading to the development of some very unusual flora and fauna. Be sure to hire a boat and go exploring.
