La RochelleLocated at the end of a bay opening onto an area of narrows, La Rochelle is a prime example of a maritime town.A simple stroll along the quaysides of its harbours highlights the importance of the sea here. Fishing, trade, yachting, cruising – for all of them, La Rochelle is one of the traditional harbours on the Atlantic coast. ![]() La Rochelle
Its four harbours now make La Rochelle one of France’s largest port areas in terms of economics and tourism.
Les Minimes yachting marina is the largest on the European Atlantic coastline and it houses the “Grand Pavois” every year, Europe’s premier floating boat show. The charm of a town lies in the variety of its districts, and the different ambiances during the day. Start, for example, at the Old Harbour for breakfast at a pavement cafe then head for the market and fill your shopping bag with fresh produce. In the afternoon, you can do a spot of shopping in the streets around the Town Hall. Offshore from La Rochelle is Fort Boyard, built to protect the roadstead at Rochefort against attack by the English. It has become a TV star thanks to a game show known throughout Europe.
