Die Inseln Ïle de Ré und Oléron
The Island of Ré
The island of Ré is a gem on the Atlantic coast, now linked to the mainland by a bridge. It is only 30 minutes from La Rochelle.
Totally flat and boasting more than 100 kms of cycle track, the Island of Ré is ideal for gentle outings by bike. Pedal across the marshes in the north of the island between Ars-en-Ré and Loix for an unforgettable, magical trip. The fascinating marshes, paradise for salt harvesters, form the wildest, most secretive part of the lsland. The Lilleau-des-Niges bird sanctuary at Les Portes-en-Ré has almost 300 species of bird. The quality of the natural light, which can be glaring or soft, is also a real delight.

The long sandy beaches along the east coast are ideal for relaxation – or a great selection of activities. Sailing, surfing and kite-surfing all use the wind to get you moving ! Inland, the scenery consists of vineyards, market gardens and forests of maritime pines. At the northern tip of the island is a beach, close to the famous Trousse-Chemise forest that features in one of Charles Aznavour’s songs. The Island of Ré also has some very attractive harbours such as La Flotte or Saint-Martin, whose fortifications designed by Vauban have been listed by Unesco. All these are places not to be missed when you step aboard the dream Island of Ré.

The Island of Oléron
On the western side facing the ocean, from Saint-Trojan to Chassiron, the Island of Oléron boasts a succession of long sandy beaches. Wind and tide ensure that the sea is never still and it can provide a safe, quiet playground for little ones or be rougher and more demanding, popular with the older members of the family.

Further south, in the heart of the island, are impressive forests of maritime pines and green oaks and stretches of marram grass. Visit the old saltmarshes, now used mainly as beds in which to refine the famous "Marennes-Oléron" oysters. The marshes are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. And wherever you are on the island, Oléron’s Romanesque, military and maritime heritage, ranging from the citadel in Le Château d’Oléron to Fort Boyard, is never far away.
