Fontevraud Abbey
Considered as one of the largest monastic communities in Europe, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is striking for its size and the immense diversity of its architecture.
Visitors come from far and wide to see the recumbent statues of the three Plantagenet monarchs who left such a mark on the Middle Ages – Henry II, Richard Lionheart and the famous Eleanor of Aquitaine – as well as Isabel of Angoulême. Their tombs are in the huge abbey church.
